Everyone is freaking out about the TTV6 in the Ford GT, and i'm just sitting here applauding Ford. Their Ecoboost engines are great engines, that make sense for their passenger cars and trucks. They make tons of torque, enough power, and consume less gas. They are perfect for use in all their non performance vehicles. 404 you say, what about the Raptor and the GT, those are performance vehicles, and they are getting the Ecoboost! The Raptor is a truck, and a performance vehicle, and the GT is a Supercar. Trucks need torque, especialy low end torque and the Ecoboost has that in spades. You also wont be lacking for power in that, sense it will have more than the V8 that is currently in the raptor. That V6 is more than enough for that car. For the GT, supercars need interesting, high tech engines, and the TTV6 is perfect for that.
The truth is, their turbo engines are better for everyday driving than their V8s, and the TTV6 in the GT is basicly a racing engine. The V8s are now exclusivley performance engines for their sports cars, and they are perfect for that job. The V8, makes a wonderfully sinfull sound, lots of power and more than enough torque. It is a perfect sports car engine, especialy the 5.2 Liter FPC one in the GT350. Making the V8 exclusive to the Mustang, makes it a more special engine, and the Mustang a more special car. Them putting the Ecoboost in the GT makes the other ecoboosts feel more special, and less like a compromise. It's really ford saying that Ecoboost is here, and it is good, but the V8 will still live on.

I have a feeling this decision was far more based on weight, packaging, engineering, and efficiency concerns.
How much does the GT turbo share with a normal Ecoboost engine? Not much, I can imagine.

Its all marketing. Ford is pushing the EcoBoost everywhere so it would make sense to show what they are capable of in their halo cars. If the 3.5 is in the GT, it's going to make the Taurus SHO that much more attractive

From what I've been reading your first paragraph is really spot on.
It's actually a whole new engine (The same thing for the Raptor to). It only shares the same size as the old one. The engine is derived from the Daytona Prototype engines. So it really doesn't share much with normal Ecoboost. Though it's still the same principle, turbos, smaller displacement and better fuel efficiency.

Yes! We need more 3 cylinder engines! Think about a car with two of those, one powering the front axle, and one on the rear. That would be an awesome car.

You could call it a distributed V12.

This isn't 100% true
EcoBoost doesn't get better real-world gas mileage in the trucks than the N/A Chevy V8 in all driving situations
